Frontier Work Permits: A Comprehensive Overview

Be from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein.

Live outside the UK.

Have started working in the UK before 31 December 2020.

Have worked in the UK at least once every 12 months since starting.

Irish citizens do not need to apply, but they may choose to do so.

British citizens (including dual nationals) are not eligible.

Periods of unemployment or inability to work may not automatically disqualify applicants.

Self-employed individuals are now eligible, provided they meet specific criteria.

Family members are not covered by the permit but may apply under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Prepare Required Documents:

Proof of employment (contracts, payslips).
Evidence of residence outside the UK.
Valid passport or national ID card.
Biometric information (fingerprints and photo).

Submit Application:

Apply online via the UK Home Office website.
Attend a biometric appointment, if required.
No application fee, but biometric submission may incur a charge.

Visa Decision & Travel:

Processing time: 3 weeks.
Digital permits available for online verification.

Incomplete documentation—ensure all required evidence is submitted.

Failure to prove residence outside the UK—this is a key requirement.

Not meeting work frequency requirements—applicants must have worked in the UK at least once every 12 months.
