Proof of Continuous Residence
By UK Visas on May 29, 2024
When you apply to settle in the UK, for indefinite leave to remain, or naturalisation as a British Citizen you will need to provide proof of continuous residence in the UK. This means that you must show evidence that you have been residing in the UK for a specific period, as a part of the visa application process.
The UK visa application requirements mandate that you maintain continuous residence in the UK and not exceed 180 days outside the country within 12 months.
Certain documents are preferred as evidence because they cover significant periods. For instance:
• Annual business accounts for self-employed individuals.
• Dated, signed letters from employers confirming UK-based employment duration.
• P60 forms for a full year.
• Confirmation letters from accredited UK organisations regarding course attendance or enrolment, accompanied by completion evidence.
• Residential mortgage statements or tenancy agreements with payment proof.
• Dated Council Tax bills serve as residence evidence for the covered period.
• Evidence of pension contributions from employers for the relevant period.
Other documents covering shorter periods will require multiple submissions to fulfil the residence requirement, such as:
• Dated payslips from UK jobs as evidence of residence for the payslip period.
• Bank statements showing UK payments as proof of residence for the statement period.
• Invoices for UK work or utility bills with the applicant's name as evidence for the billed period.
• Letters from UK healthcare professionals confirming appointments attended.
• UK entry passport stamps as evidence for the month of entry.
• Travel tickets for inbound travel to the UK as evidence for the travel month.
Please note that character references or testimonials from family and friends will not be acceptable evidence as they are not from an impartial source. The same applies to photographs of special occasions.
